If you have one or more missing teeth, then there is only one question you need to answer: what is the best tooth replacement option for your smile? Finding the right one is essential for the well being of your oral and general health. Columbus dentist Dr. Walt Mick may recommend dental implants. After examining your mouth, teeth and jaw, he will be able to tell you whether or not you are an implant candidate.
Dental Implants and Your Smile
For the most part, just about all of the patients we see turn out to qualify for dental implants. However, there are some basic ground rules. First, you must be in overall good health. Receiving dental implants does, after all, require minor surgery, so we’ll need to ask you a few questions about your medical history. Then, Dr. Mick will perform a thorough dental exam, including a close look at your teeth and gums.
Dental Implants and Your Jawbone
Because dental implants are surgically set in bone, the condition of your jaw is extremely important. Basically, Dr. Mick will need to know that there is adequate bone density in your jaw. The titanium post of an implant must bond with bone tissue. In order for this bond to be strong and secure, there must be enough bone density or volume. If you don’t have a sufficient amount of bone, then the bond may not be hold. In this case, bone grafting to increase bone density may be an option, or Dr. Mick will recommend another type of tooth replacement.
Clean Mouth, Health Dental Implants
With dental implants, Columbus residents and other patients must commit to keeping their teeth and gums clean. Brushing at least twice each day with fluoride toothpaste is essential, as well as flossing once a day. These steps help to remove plaque buildup that contains bacteria. Don’t think that plaque isn’t attracted to dental implants and other prosthetic devices in your mouth. Plaque can accumulate along the gum line near your implants, too. If not removed, then the bacteria in plaque can begin to infect gum tissue. Your gums play a vital role in the health and anchoring of your implants, so be sure to pay close attention when brushing and flossing here.
