What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling and root planing is also known as a “deep cleaning.” During the procedure, we clear plaque away from both above and below the gumline — this is the scaling part of the treatment. Root planing involves smoothing out the roots of teeth so it is more difficult for bacteria to cling to them.

How Do I Know if I Need Scaling and Root Planing?

Dr. Glynn can help you determine if scaling and root planing is the best way to address your gum disease. In some cases, simple changes to oral hygiene are enough to reverse gum disease, while in other cases, extensive surgical treatment is required. Scaling and root planing falls between these two extremes.

You should definitely come in for a periodontal (gum) checkup if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:

• Red or swollen gums
• Gums that bleed easily when you brush
• Gum recession
• Persistent bad breath

How Does Scaling and Root Planing Work?

We want to make sure you are comfortable, so we will numb your mouth at the beginning of your appointment. In some cases, we also use sedation. We’ll use special tools to scrape bacteria off of the teeth and smooth out your tooth roots. You might feel some pressure as we are working, but you should not experience any significant pain. Finishing your treatment might require multiple appointments.

After scaling and root planing, your gums and teeth may be sore and extra sensitive. These side effects may linger for a few weeks, but they should eventually fade away. In the meantime, you may need to limit your intake of acidic, hot, and cold foods.
