What are Dental Veneers?

A veneer is a thin type of dental restoration typically made out of porcelain or resin. It’s made to fit exactly over your teeth to cover up multiple imperfections at once. We can personalize your veneer so that it looks completely natural in your mouth; most people won’t be able to tell that you had dental work done and will only notice your dazzling new grin.

The Process of Getting Veneers

First, we’ll examine your mouth to make sure that you aren’t suffering from tooth decay, gum disease, or any other oral health issues. Any existing problems will need to be treated before you can have any sort of cosmetic treatment done. Then, if you’re getting traditional veneers, we will prepare your teeth by removing a small amount of enamel. You’ll be given temporary veneers to wear while an offsite lab fabricates your permanent ones. Once your veneers arrive, we’ll schedule a second appointment to attach them to your teeth.

The Benefits of Veneers

Why choose veneers to enhance your smile? There are several good reasons:

  • Versatility: Instead of having multiple treatments done to address different cosmetic issues, veneers give you a way to make several improvements at once.
  • Natural Look and Feel: Veneers are made out of lifelike, tooth-colored materials that blend in with the rest of your smile. They also feel very comfortable when worn.
  • Stain-Resistant: Porcelain is a non-porous material that doesn’t stain easily, so you won’t have to worry about your new smile becoming discolored.
  • Low Maintenance: Veneers don’t require any kind of special care. All you need to do is brush and floss regularly to keep them clean.

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

There are several factors you’ll need to consider before you commit to getting veneers. Naturally, you’ll want to take the cost of the treatment into account. During your initial consultation, our team can give you an estimate of how much you can expect to pay for veneers; we’ll also help you explore the available financial options that make it easier to fit cosmetic dentistry into your budget.

How to Make Veneers Affordable

Most dental insurance companies won’t cover cosmetic treatments. As such, you usually can’t expect your dental insurance plan to help pay for veneers. You can, however, apply for financing with CareCredit to make your cosmetic treatment more affordable. CareCredit offers payment plans that will let you pay for your veneers in budget-friendly monthly installments. Call our office today to learn more about how financing works at our office as well as what steps you can take to apply for a plan.

Veneers FAQs

Are veneers permanent?

Veneers aren’t permanent; at some point, they will need to be replaced due to wear and tear. You can help your restorations last as long as possible by practicing good oral hygiene and visiting our office for checkups.

While veneers don’t last forever, they are considered irreversible because they can only be placed after small amounts of enamel have been filed away. That means that the treated teeth will always need to be covered by veneers or crowns for protection.

Do veneers give you a lisp?

Veneers change the thickness of your teeth, which can cause a lisp when you try to pronounce certain words. For most people, the lisp occurs when pronouncing words containing -s or -v sounds.

Generally speaking, the lisp will be temporary. It will eventually go away once your tongue is used to moving in a way that takes your veneers into account. Practice can help speed up the process, so try reading aloud and repeating any words that are giving you trouble. If necessary, we can adjust the thickness of your veneers so that they don’t cause a lisp.

Can you whiten veneers?

Unfortunately, discolored veneers can’t be whitened the same way as your natural teeth. If your restorations become stained, they will likely need to be replaced.

Remember that while whitening doesn’t work on veneers, it still affects the rest of your teeth. To avoid giving your smile an uneven tone, it’s recommended that you have teeth whitening performed before getting veneers. That way the restorations can be designed to match the rest of your newly brightened grin.

Is there anyone who shouldn’t get veneers?

Veneers are not recommended if:

  • You currently have untreated tooth decay. Covering a cavity with a veneer can make the problem more difficult to treat.
  • You have gum disease. Bleeding or swollen gums can affect any impressions we take of your mouth, meaning your veneers or Lumineers won't fit correctly.
  • You have bruxism, meaning you grind and clench your teeth while you're asleep. Grinding and clenching can wear down or break veneers. Fortunately, you can keep your new smile safe by wearing a custom-made mouthguard.
